An early look at leavers

26 Nov, 2008 09:58 AM
LEAVERS Week had a “relatively incident free” start on Monday with thousands of leavers showing up at the leavers’ zone, more sober and well-behaved than ever before.

According to police, leavers had embraced the concept of the leavers-only zone. With 3500 leavers having attended on Monday night and another 500-1500 expected to attend throughout the week – if the weather stays clear.

About 1100 wristbands were sold on the first day of sale, which was Sunday, when leavers lined up in Dunsborough’s Lions Park to get one. The wristbands continued to sell on Monday, which saw the Busselton bus station crowded – this was the first year wristbands were sold at the bus station.

The wristbands allow entry into the leavers’ zone and access to the bus transport service throughout leavers week.

It is estimated 5000-6000 wristbands will be sold this year. Twenty per cent of all the sales will go back to the Dunsborough community through the Leavers Community Appreciation Fund.

Police said there were a lot less leavers showing up drunk at the zone, and many more behaving well and having fun.

There were, however, a few arrests. Three male leavers were charged with assault and trespass after a minor fight broke out at a Dunsborough caravan park that involved 10 leavers.

Some of them armed themselves with tent poles, causing a chipped tooth as well as some minor cuts and bruises.

Another leaver was arrested in the leavers’ zone for disorderly conduct.

Both Dunsborough and Busselton police have received several noise complaints and reports of mischief, such as a group of 15 leavers who were found swimming naked in a pool at an accommodation provider, as well as a small group that tramped around a Queen Street roundabout in funny costumes.

So far, both towns have been “relatively damage free” and Dunsborough looked the same as usual when police drove through on Tuesday morning.

Two leavers were involved in a single-car accident on Caves Road, with a non-leaver driving the vehicle.

The driver received a broken wrist and both the leavers suffered shock. No drinking was involved. Another female leaver drove into a barrier at Ludlow River Bridge after trying to read the map while driving, but was not injured.

A strong police presence will continue on the roads and extra police resources will stay in place to make sure the summer traffic and influx of young people during Leavers Week will remain under control. They are everywhere checking speed, drink driving and other traffic offences.
