Busselton City councillor concerned about youth crime

08 Feb, 2012 09:29 AM
BUSSELTON City councillor Grant Henley has expressed concern about the laxity youths enjoy in the town.

He was not talking as a councillor but as a victim of crime.

“I have concerns that some elements of our youth are taking advantage of seasonal opportunity and the overworked and under resourced constabulary to run amok during the summer.

“We get great support for events like Southbound, Leavers etc and need similar augmentation when our population skyrockets over the holidays.

“Having been the victim of several targeted and opportunist thefts recently, I am aware of this spike in the incidents reported.

“Police are hamstrung when they are required to lose patrols to transfer people into care or custody in Bunbury or even Perth. A serious MVA (motor vehicle accident) takes our law and order out of action for a long period and a rogue element is jumping at the chance to capitalise and act with impunity.

“I would also like to see the punishment match the crime, when these elements do eventually get caught to act as more of a deterrent. I will be urging the community to support our MLA (Troy Buswell) in the call for better resources for the Busselton station.”
