Busselton dance crew are jerkin

JERKIN is the new youth dance craze and Daihaan Lambat, Matt Carpenter and Imran Lambat are bringing it to Busselton.

According to Daihaan, jerkin is more than a dance – its a way of life.

“It is a type of dance that you do at parties. It started up in America and has its own style of music, which is inspired by hip-hop but is more upbeat,” he said.

“It is aimed at spreading a positive style of hip-hop – away from the traditional negative aspects of gangster rap.”

The dance moves involve a lot of low-to-the-ground legwork and extreme knee bends.

The dancers are constantly moving and need to be able to crouch, balance on one leg, while stretching out the other, and bounce and spin.

Some of jerkin’s signature moves include the reject (the running man in reverse), the pin drop (balancing on one leg while the other leg goes behind the balanced leg to allow dropping to the ground) and the sponge bob.

Daihaan, Matt and Imran taught themselves the new dance moves and have formed a Busselton crew called Roflcopter.

Daihaan said that they were already quite popular in Busselton and were looking to expand their crew.

“You can find kids jerkin at most parties in Busselton. They clear a space for us so that we can show off our moves.

“We are hoping to get more people to join our crew and grow big enough to perform at concerts, like some of our counterparts on the east coast.

“It would be good to jerk at a local concert like Southbound,” he said.

They have also had a big response to a youtube video of themselves jerkin, with more than 4000 hits already.
