Cape Naturaliste college student suspended for bullying

08 Feb, 2012 09:36 AM
A STUDENT has been suspended from a local high school after allegedly assaulting a fellow student because of a stolen skateboard.

It has been reported that he kneed a colleague in the head in a targeted attack during the school’s lunch break, on Friday.

Cape Naturaliste College’s principal Mark Gillett became aware of the incident when footage of it, filmed on a mobile phone, was posted to Youtube later than day.

“We were shocked by this incident as it is completely out of character with the college and its students but, acted immediately to suspend the perpetrator on Friday and provide support to the victim,” he said.

“My message to any student acting in this way is that our school is not the place for violence.”

Mr Gillett said the perpetrator had been suspended for “an appropriate amount of time” and that the video was removed from the social media site within 24 hours.

It was also reported that a parent, of a student at Cape Naturaliste, who did not wish to be named, said there was a “bullying culture” at the school.

“These students need to be made an example of – it is not acceptable behaviour,” he said.

However, in reply Mr Gillett said the school had recently participated in a child health promotion research project, with Edith Cowan University, and that the results indicated that the vast majority of students reported they always feel safe at the college and feel they are a part of the college.

“An even larger number agreed that staff take the prevention of bullying seriously,” he said.

“The information from the survey will allow us to improve policies and to address issues from social media postings,”

The incident was reported to Busselton police yesterday and Mr Gillett said the school would be cooperating fully with their investigation.

Officer-in-Charg e Senior Sergeant Steve Principe said they were conducting inquiries into the matter.

“The assault was alleged to have happened on Friday morning,” he said.

“A 14-year-old student has alleged he was assaulted by another 14-year-old student in relation to a stolen skateboard.”

once again there is no punishment for this student a 5 day suspension that included the weekend is not good enough, what lesson is he learning from this

Being expelled is an option to be looked at to set an example of what WILL happen to Bullies when they attack others just for starters!

It is about time there are consequences for the actions of these teens, a suspenion from school isnt good enough!

Maybe if Schools started making more of an example of these Bullies they will think twice before attacking others!

make the punishment fit the crime!
