Church stands their ground on Holy Mile move

28 Jul, 2010 11:50 AM
THE biggest and most popular camping site in the ‘Holy Mile’ is resisting a move to shift caravans from the proposed new 50m exclusion zone.

Seventh Day Adventist campsite spokesperson Kevin Driscoll said they had six caravans in the exclusion zone.

“We need them for revenue. As it is we only charge $10 person and we are facing steep increases in costs when the new leases come up for renewal next year,” he said.

He will put his case when the council considers a report on the Locke Estate at tonight’s meeting.

While the report acknowledges removing and relocating recently refurbished vans would result in considerable expense it says the purpose of the setback was to mitigate levels of erosion by restricting development in vulnerable areas.

The report said the Locke Estate project had progressed through a series of workshops and council decisions to enable the shire and current lessees to develop a clear understanding of what was required to properly manage the reserve over the next two decades.
