Me and my cars - Wally McGregor

SO which of these three cars would you expect to be the slow coach?

They are a 1962 Valiant, 1975 Triumph Stag and 1966 Hillman Gazelle, all owned by local car enthusiast Wally McGregor.

Chances are the one you select as the slowest is actually the fastest of the three, well up to 160km, or in old currency 100mph.

It’s the Hillman, which was purchased new by Wally.

“Despite it’s grandad look it is faster than the other two up to 100 miles an hour,” he said.

“Gay, (his wife) and I have had good service and a lot of fun with it over the years.”

Wally laughs that it is not a suitable vehicle for older people, but says when he purchased it 44 years ago it was a high performance car and he said to himself, “Right I’ll have one of those”.

The vehicle has the registration plate from his father’s vehicle, SU 209. The prefix is the old Sussex Road Board.

He added the Stag to his stable in 1990 and the Valiant in 2009.

Wally chuckles when he talks about the value of the vehicles.

“Cars are a bit like shares. You only lose money on them when you sell them.”

Though the Stag “performs like the luxury sports car it was in its day”, Wally is enjoying the eye-catching fire engine-red Valiant, which he restored.

“I’d previously had a couple of Triumphs,” he said. “It’s a small car that drives like a big car.”

The three vehicles have a common denominator.

Between 1964-68 Wally worked for the Busselton agent for Chrysler, which was the agent for the three vehicle brands.

He said all three vehicles had perceived problems, but if you put them aside and worked on their positive points they each gave a lot of enjoyment.

“The Hillman is seen as a grandad’s car and the Valiant is considered to be just a big tank,” he said.

The Stag had over-heating problems that he has rectified. He tried to take each of the the three vehicles for a spin at least twice a month.

“You need to for the hydraulics.”

Wally said that when he obtained the Hillman he was going through a phase of life.

But if he wanted to “screw people’s heads”, it was the Valiant, as they just couldn’t help but look at it because it was an eye-catcher.

His latest project, is restoring ‘Percy’, a 1958 Rover 90, which belonged to one of Busselton’s most renowned doctors, Percy Yates.

“He brought me into the world and on my 60th birthday I won the tender for his car,” Wally said.

“It had sat in a garage for 14 or 15 years and has its original number plates, BN 17.”

Wally has taken it for a spin around his property, using a milk crate for a seat, while the original ones are being restored.

But his love of unique vehicles doesn’t end there. He also has a Jeep Wrangler. But the vehicle he drives most is his school bus.
