Paraplegic Leonie Semark finds a home

18 Nov, 2009 12:34 PM
LEONIE Semark is delighted to be moving into a home of her own after a tough two years.

She became a paraplegic after complications with a severe asthma condition, went through a divorce and has been living in a hospital room.

Despite this Leonie has been very upbeat and was delighted when she received word that there was a place available for her to rent.

“I am so excited to be moving in. I couldn’t believe it when I learnt that I would be able to get a place of my own. Even though it’s quite small it’s going to be my little place,” she said.

“I am pleased that there are two bedrooms because that means my dad, my son and my friends can come visit me. I am looking forward to having Christmas in my own home.”

It was reported in the Mail on October 14 that Leonie was looking for a place to rent from a compassionate home-owner to which we had a good response. The generosity wasn’t needed as Homes West managed to find Leonie a two-bedroom unit close to town.

The unit has been made wheelchair accessible and Leonie is delighted with it, despite the limited space.

“Every time I see it I like it more,” she said. She is a bit apprehensive about moving out of the hospital after living there for two years, however she said they have done a great job looking after her.

“I am a bit nervous about moving into my own place. It is a big step and it has been two years since I last had a home of my own. I’m looking forward to being able to do what I want, when I want and being able to come and go when I want. The hospital staff have been fantastic and I would like to thank everyone who helped me out.”

Leonie will get the keys to her place on Monday, but before she can move in she needs several more essential items.

“Because I have been living in a hospital room I don’t have many of the usual household items like dinner sets, cutlery, vacuum cleaner, mop, bucket, table or chairs.

“The main items I need are a left-handed fridge and a washing machine – once I have these then I will be able to move in. I would also like to have a small table and chairs to fit in my unit,” she said.

Leonie will be able to apply for a grant to buy these items, but is hoping to borrow some items while the paperwork is processed.
