A SNAKE forced the evacuation of a Year 4 class at Our Lady of the Cape school last week.
The classroom was cleared at 2.30pm and students were kept out until home time on Thursday, after the snake was discovered.
Local volunteer snake remover Roger Jackson came to the rescue and removed the foot-long dugite.
Unfortunately the snake had been badly damaged behind one of the book cases. Roger decided to put it in a jar so the students could keep it.
“It had been damaged, so when I arrived and handled the snake it was squashed. I put it in a jar and pickled it so the kids could use it for show and tell,” Roger said.
“It was only a baby snake, but because tiger snakes are giving birth and dugites are hatching there are plenty of baby snakes around at the moment.”
Roger said the snake in the classroom was only about two weeks old and people should be aware they are on the move this time of year.
“In autumn there are shorter days they are on the move getting ready for winter and getting food, and there are baby snakes now as well,” he said.
