Time running out for submissions on the Busselton foreshore's revitalisation

27 Jan, 2010 09:49 AM
TIME is running out for members of the public to have their say in shaping Busselton’s future, with only a week left to make submissions on the foreshore revitalisation project.

Busselton Foreshore Working Group (BFWG) chairperson Helen Shervington said the public consultation process provided an opportunity for both residents and visitors to the district to put their wishes on the list.

“The small ideas are often the best; we don’t expect anyone to come up with the total concept. Someone suggested we get rid of the flies, other people have asked for a fully-netted swimming area to keep the stingers out. No idea is too big or too small to consider,” Helen said.

Having spent her life in Busselton, Helen remembers the halcyon days when the jetty and the foreshore were at the heart of the community; where folk meet for a chat in the evening while children fished, and families picnicked.

These days, she said the business community had turned its back on the foreshore and it had become somewhat tired in appearance and amenities.

The BFWG aims to revamp the foreshore area and return it to its former glory, but community input is vital to achieving this goal.

“The town is changing, and the foreshore will develop whether we like it or not,” said Helen.

“This way we can all have a say in how that change is managed, and protect the integrity of our town.”

Last week representatives of the BFWG held an information session during Petticoat Lane celebrations, which elicited more than 50 new submissions.

The 2020 Project Group has also been working towards a plan for improvements and future development in the Busselton town centre.

The 2020 group plans to work with the BFWG to develop a connection between the foreshore and the town centre.

Submissions close on Wednesday, February 3. Forms can be found in last week’s Mail, or from www.busselton.wa.gov.au. Completed forms should be dropped off at the shire administration office at Southern Drive, or posted to The chairperson, Busselton Foreshore Working Group, Survey Form, Lock Bag 1, Busselton WA 6280.
