Upgrade to the Geographe Leisure Centre on the cards

03 Feb, 2010 11:40 AM
AN UPGRADE to the Geographe Leisure Centre (GLC) is on the cards, with Vasse MLA, Troy Buswell, set to meet with shire president Ian Stubbs to discuss its future.

“I fully support a long-term vision for this very important community facility, rather than an ad hoc approach,” Mr Buswell said.

“I will be meeting with Mr Stubbs to discuss and explore the possibilities regarding the future of the Geographe Leisure Centre, with a view to sourcing State Government funding, for example, through the Royalties for Regions initiative.

“I have also met with a number of user groups who are keen to provide input that will assist with the long-term development planning of Geographe Leisure Centre,” he said.

The manager of the Geographe Leisure Centre, Tony Wear, said they had a leisure services plan, with guiding principles of potential upgrades.

“Under that plan a heated outdoor pool, increased energy sustainability, clubroom facilities and court expansion would be on the centre’s wishlist,” he said.

“In order for any of these upgrades to occur there will have to be feasibility studies to determine if they are viable and then it is all subject to funding.

“There is around a quarter of a million paid visitations to the centre each year and it is home to many different sporting organisations, so any positive community feedback or funding is welcomed,” he said.

Allan Whitfield the manager of community development at the Shire of Busselton said: The construction of the group fitness room at the GLC marks the first step towards the implementation of the facility enhancements at the GLC as contained in the Leisure Service Plan adopted in 2007.

“Apart from ongoing maintenance items (for example the cost of just under $100,000 to fix the pool lining), the heating of the outdoor pool and an increase in the number of indoor courts have also been identified as needed in the future.”

The president of the Busselton Volleyball Association, Stuart Luff, said that they would look forward to an upgrade of the GLC.

“At the moment the GLC suits our needs pretty well for matches and competitions.

“We would welcome an outdoor area with barbecue facilities or a licensed area where people can watch the volleyball and a room for meeting and a coffee shop would also be good.”

Allan Price the president of the Busselton Swimming Club said that their main priority for an upgrade would be a 50m heated pool.

“We would also like to be able to host major swim meets, which is something we don’t have enough space for at the moment – our own club (70-100 members) is bursting at the seams,” he said.
