Wine region remains unprotected

28 Dec, 2011 09:46 AM
FRESH calls for the Margaret River Region to be protected by special legislation have been sparked by Environment Minister Bill Marmion’s Christmas present decision on the Vasse Coal Project.

Margaret River Wine Industry Association chief executive, Nick Power was pleased with the decision.

“The association is absolutely delighted that Minister Marmion has seen the scientific evidence placed before him with regards to protecting the water resources of the region,” he said.

“We have long supported protective legislation and will be continuing to advocate strongly in this regard.

NO COAL!ition spokesperson Brent Watson said the group was grateful for the decision and hoped the State Government would not override it.

“We also hope that they (Government) in fact strengthen the outcome with special legislation, because as the law is presently written, Margaret River is not safe,” Mr Watson said.

“The lease has 20 years to run and there is nothing to stop the miner from resubmitting. He might be discouraged, but not prevented.”
