LOCAL paddler, Jim Pollitt, will do the 13km kayak leg in the Anaconda Adventure Race this weekend.
It’s the first time he’s entered the race and after months of training, he finally rates his level of preparedness at a comfortable six out of 10.
With a good level of residual fitness, Jim’s main challenge during the run up to the event has been staying mentally sharp and focused in the wake of some particularly harrowing practice sessions.
He faced his demons a couple of weeks ago during a full run of the Augusta race course. “I picked a really bad day, a front was coming and it was like being in a washing machine,” he said. “I had my heart in my mouth the whole time, I don’t think I’ve ever been more fearful.”
But having finished the course in the worst possible conditions, Jim’s feeling quietly confident about surviving the event, at least.
“The organisers have stipulated that competitors need to be prepared for heavy conditions,” said Jim. “My wife tells me she has me fully insured, so it looks like she’s prepared too.”
