Busselton and Dunsborough women encouraged to take up mountain biking

WENDY Paine loves spending her weekends climbing hills on her mountain bike and is encouraging other local women to join her.

“Mountain biking is an exciting sport that keeps you fit and has a good social aspect,” she said.

“However, unlike other bike sports (triathlon and road cycling) there is a very small ratio of women to men competing.”

This was evident in the Karri Cup mountain bike race held in Northcliffe on the long weekend. Out of more than 400 competitors only 10 per cent were female.

“I want to encourage more women to come and ride with me on the scenic mountain bike tracks. There are courses for all skill levels and good prospects for riders to progress,” she said.

Despite the high proportion of male riders in the event, Wendy finished in the top 50 per cent of riders (and first in her age group) in the 50km race.

Other local riders to excel were Rowan Brown (4th overall), Rod Brown (3rd in his category), Tony Best and Steve Arthur (personal bests in the 100km), Joe Reither (first-timer) and Susan Arthur.
