BUSSELTON Rifle Club held its annual service rifle shoot on the weekend with 54 shooters from Geraldton, Perth, Albany, Bunbury and Busselton competing.
South West shooters completed a clean sweep of the titles on offer, taking out the top three positions in the individual event and Busselton winning the teams competition.
The weather was good and the shooting was of the highest calibre as shooters competed for the Bill King Trophy, named after a local rifle club member who passed away recently.
Jack Nixon, from Gelorup, won the individual honours with a stunning display of off-hand standing shooting. His effort, including bullseyes at 100m, will be hard to better in years to come.
Service rifle shooting is held twice a month at the Busselton club range at Coolilup, off Hutton Road. They use historic service rifles that many dad’s and granddads carried during the wars and continue the tradition of firing these rifles on the range.
Busselton Rifle Club captain David Kelly said that the sport of shooting was not an expensive pastime, and the competition was even.
“The motto at Busselton Rifle Club is for everyone to leave having enjoyed themselves, with a smile on their face and to have learnt the skill of shooting these old rifles,” David said.
