THE first race in the Offshore series, held on Sunday, was a success for everyone involved.
The wind was a manageable 18-20 knot north westerly and 13 cruisers entered.
B division was given 30 minutes start, which found Emily II and Matilda playing an anxious, but successful, game of ‘hunt the buoy’ several kilometres north-east of the start.
The first of the A fleet soon overtook them with Go Dogs Go almost 10 minutes ahead of the other contenders.
Several yachts were in close contact at the Abbey buoy, Twist and Shout just ahead of Electric Tram and Wings of Wind, who showed her true speed as they neared the jetty buoy.
Gene Genie and Pulp Fiction were also up there with the leaders.
The last run to the wing buoy was easily led by Go Dogs Go, announcing their turn for home with a flash of green spinnaker in the distance. Electric Tram and Twist and Shout duelled in the last leg, crossing the line only five seconds apart.
The four next finishers Wings of Wind, Skyrider, Pulp Fiction and Gene Genie were also separated by just seconds in both handicap and elapsed time.
Ziggy Stardust sailed a good race continuing to improve her position and taking first place on handicap.
