WHEN it comes to finding the right supplement to help with training for the Busselton Ironman, first-time competitor Jarred Smith is perfectly placed. He works as a pharmacist at West Busselton Pharmacy and can prescribe the perfect addition to his diet to boost his training.
“My job helps me with training for the Ironman as I have access to the latest supplements to help with aches, pains and nutrients that my body needs,” Jarrad said.
Protein powders and power bars are no supplement for training though, and while some Ironman trainees are out pounding along the footpath in the freezing cold, Jarred tried to avoid training in the bad winter weather.
“My training changes according to the weather conditions,” Jarred said.
“If possible I try to stay warm by training on the treadmill at home instead of running in the wet and cold, although I have still been out riding in the rain.”
Jarred does feel that he progressing well towards his goal of finishing the Ironman.
“Training for the Ironman fits in well with work because I can train whenever it suits me, unlike a team sport that has training fixed twice a week. I am going well, touch wood, and hope to finish the Ironman in around 11 hours.”
A day off work means a big day on the bike, on the treadmill or in the pool for Jarred, and work on weekends means that sometimes training is a lonely affair.
“I like training solo. I enjoy having some time to myself and also it helps me build the motivation that I will need to complete the Ironman.”
Jarred is not completely new to Ironman, having completed the last two half Ironman events. The Mail asked him what the hardest part about training for the full Ironman was. “Finding time to do washing. Seriously, as I live by myself sometimes I don’t have the time with work and training. Thankfully, my sister has been helping me out,” he said.
“The other thing which is hard is the lifestyle change and being off the alcohol. I’m definitely looking forward to the Ironman after-party when I finish. I would also like to see more young people, especially some nice ladies, enjoy the after-party with me,” he joked
After the big event, and of course the after party, Jarred is determined to relax down the beach, sleep in and re-acclimitise himself with the local pubs.
