Geographe Bay Yacht Club's Australia Day Regatta

27 Jan, 2010 12:04 PM
GO Dogs Go was the first local boat to finish the prestigious Cock of the Bay race in the Geographe Bay Yacht Club’s Australia Day Regatta.

Ben Roodhouse, Craig Godridge, Simon Nicolls and Lucas Flynn guided Go Dogs Go home, behind the winner of the event, Fig Jam (Alex Van der List, and Cody Flynn), a 49er from Rockingham.

Numbers were slightly down from last year’s Australia Day Regatta, but the event is well on its way to becoming a big success. Competitors from various clubs enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and the chance to camp with their families alongside their boats.

The sky blue sails of the tiny minnows made an attractive sight as they competed with the local pelican fleet.

Flying ants and 29er’s demonstrated their skills in competition with the GBYC’s 125’s.

The first race was on Saturday, with the prestigious Cock of the Bay event on Sunday morning, and a further race followed that afternoon.

Strong winds and horrendous gusts made the afternoon race demanding, with many boats capsizing and retiring.

Gwyn Cracknell and Peter Togno in Esoteric did a complete somersault, resulting in minor, but painful injuries.

Monday was a fun day that allowed the competitors to relax and see what the region had to offer, or take part in scheduled events.

The regatta finished with presentations after the final race on Australia Day.
