THE Busselton Redback Reserves were beaten two goals to nil by Hay Park United when the two teams met at Churchill Park on Sunday.
Hay Park has a reputation for producing quality soccer in both divisions of the women’s competition.
The Bunbury side had Busselton under pressure for the majority of the game. The visitors had numerous shots on goal but they all went astray and at half time, the score was still nil all.
This was due to the hard work of goalkeeper Tracey Hewlett, who together with the backline of Anita Parsons, Lisa Blechynden and Jodi Dickason, managed to frustrate Hay Park by keeping everything out of the net. Dickason could have had many easier games than this one to celebrate her 100-game milestone, but will have to settle on her solid contribution as a consolation.
Dene Mayer’s return to soccer was a baptism of fire when she found herself at sweeper for a lot of the time, but she acquitted herself well.
Claire Marchand-Johns did her utmost to enhance the Redbacks’ chances, but there were just too many good players for Hay Park on the day.
The league match-up between Busselton and Hay Park was a much better effort on the Redback’s behalf and they drew the game two-all. Hay Park opened the scoring but Therese Fletcher headed home a fine pass to equalise the score during the first half.
The Redbacks were playing a much more determined brand of football than in previous weeks.
Sharon Seia had to leave the pitch after a heavy clash, but Busselton will need to continue with the physical side of the game to match the better teams in the competition.
Hay Park scored again, but the Redbacks kept coming and Carissa Wright took the honours with Busselton’s second goal which saw the premiership points shared between the two clubs. But it was a day for the goalkeepers, with Sasha Read playing her first game since last season, and she would have been delighted with her efforts against quality opposition.
In a scenario that doesn’t happen very often, Hewlett joined Read to receive the Esplanade Hotel’s player-of-the-day award.
