ON Saturday Busselton Tennis Club’s season gets into top gear, with the official opening of the new season.
South West MLC Barry House will offically start the 09/10 tennis year in Busselton during the afternoon’s social tennis session.
Two sets were scored last Saturday as part of the Live Ladder competition, sponsored by Albies Bar and Bistro.
After the two sets only 12 remained undefeated and remain ‘live’, with Dave Davis, Wendy Weir, Bernie Masters and Fred La Rose leading the ladder by virtue of their superior games for and against ratio.
Dave Davis and Bernie Masters had a big result in set four downing Heinz Panek and Kevin Merifield 8-1 Ray Comley and Wendy Weir also had an 8-1 result against Barb Davis and Les Cousins.
New member Erik Schmidt also had two good wins.
The ladder-leaders will be vying to continue their winning run in next Saturday’s third set at 3pm.
In weekend pennants action David Triffitt’s ‘Baseline Bandits’ beat Australind in a tight seven sets to five rubber, with Grace Bancroft destructive in moving forward, while pennant newcomers Frank Marsh and Nigel Paine displayed steady nerves at critical times.
Busselton’s One Hit Wonders, led by Tracy Adams, defeated Dunsborough 10 sets to 2, with Nola Fletcher winning all six of her sets and Paul Collins five. Dropped Volleys made the long road trip to Bridgetown and put in a valiant effort against the Bridgetown all-male team Even More Hopefuls.
Going into the final round of matches at four sets all Bridgetown proved too strong at the end of the day, eventually winning by eight sets to four. Best players for Dropped Volleys were Colin Miller, Deanne Smith and Greg Jacobs.
