ALISON Kirk secured her eighth Busselton Tennis Club singles title on Sunday with another dominant display of high-class tennis.
She triumphed in the final against Wendy Weir 6-3, 6-2 and beat Grace Bancroft in the semi-finals. Weir’s semi-final saw her overcome Sandy Sigelski, while Nola Fletcher won the plate against Deanne Smith 7-2.
The men’s singles produced the most open field in many years with half the entrants rated a good chance to make an impact. Cameron Braithwaite and Brycen Godfrey will meet in the final on Saturday. They are both newcomers to the club and impressed by defeating the top seeds in the semi-finals.
Braithwaite won his semi-final against number one seed, David Triffitt 6-1, 6-4, while Godfrey beat James McGregor 6-2, 6-2 in the other semi-final. The final will be played this Saturday at 4.30pm, with visitors welcome to watch what should be an enthralling match.
Cliff Silke won the men’s plate after winning three tie-break matches. He prevailed over Josh Grace 7-6, Shane Weinman 7-6 (8-6), and then in the final beat Dave Davis 7-6.
The final of the Super Set 5 social competition will also be held on Saturday. The first social set will be at 2pm with visitors and new members welcome to play.
Wednesday morning mixed tennis continues to attract good numbers and new members. The first of four sets commences at 9.30am. The club’s junior members play social sets on Friday afternoons from 4-6.30pm. New players are welcome to join.
