Locals dominate state series beach volleyball

03 Feb, 2010 01:02 PM
Local beach volleyball players showed their Perth counterparts how it was done in the Pro Busselton State Series Beach Volleyball tournament on the weekend.

Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River players were successful in three divisions, had three more grand final runner-ups and numerous quarter and semi-final appearances.

Busselton brothers Rob and Barry Kinninmont dug, set and spiked their way to victory in the men’s A-grade competition. They were undefeated in their pool games and after winning their semi final comfortably they played Margaret River’s John Lawrie and Allan Coulthard in the grand final.

They brought their good form and momentum into the final and some impressive court coverage to set themselves up to finish off points at the net, with some powerful spiking and won in two sets.

Tyler Gow and Jarrad Kennedy came close in the men’s B-grade. They progressed to the final after some impressive work in their pool games. Some spectacular dives from Jarrad, coupled with some strong hitting from Tyler was the key to their success. Unfortunately they couldn’t carry their momentum into the final and lost in a close encounter.

Busselton’s Katie Vaiknemets and Anna Speranzar won through to the C-grade women’s final, where they triumphed against Ali Carson and Melanie Robertson.

And local teams dominated in the men’s C-grade competitions, with four teams making the semi finals. Tim Carrier (Busselton) and Kane Hooson (Margaret River) faced Bradley Byrne and Josh McGann (both Busselton) in one final and Murray Scott (Busselton) and Rhys Thompson (Dunsborough) played two players from Busselton’s indoor beach competition, Lance Weggs and Matt Evans, in the other.

Both semis were close, but in the end Tim and Kane and Murray and Rhys were too strong for their opponents and faced off in a thrilling grand final. A strong breeze emerged for the match, which made playing conditions difficult.

Despite this the standard of volleyball was excellent, with Murray and Rhys taking the first set 17-15. Kane and Tim fought back to win the second 15-12 and then with the match on the line they held their nerve to win the decisive set 12-10.
