TOWNS’ under-15 football team has taken a new approach to training by inviting a local martial arts expert, Phil Holt, to help improve their game.
Phil, who is a black belt in Bukido Taijutsu, has volunteered his expertise to teach the young footballers a variety of collision management techniques.
Phil’s ambition is to help make football safer. “In sports like football there is a high level of impact and yet there is no training to help people to fall safely,” said Phil. “I teach the boys simple and effective techniques to help them ‘fall over’.
This means they can fall heavily and avoid getting hurt. My purpose is to help make the game safer as injuries can be a real problem for participants in this, and any, contact sport.”
“I am doing this for free and if it is deemed successful I will volunteer my services to any of the other local clubs.
The kids have already shown a strong interest in this type of training and any other clubs who are interested should contact me to see how I can help them,” said Phil.
In this session Phil taught the players about how best to break their fall whether they were falling forwards, backwards or sideways.
He said: “The front, back and side break falls help minimise impact when you hit the ground. It may take practise to get used to , but when you master these techniques it will improve your game.”
Another technique he showed the players was how to roll on impact, which would allow them to get back on their feet quicker.
Interested clubs can contact Phil on 0438 386 012 or at the Bukido Taijutsu martial arts centre, Barlee Street, on 09751 4943.
