THE first championship race for the Geographe Bay Yacht Club was held in difficult and gusty conditions. The average wind speed was only in the low 20s, but gusts were recorded in excess of 30-plus knots.
Ten cruisers crossed the start line with Skyrider and Twist and Shout leading the way. Pulp Fiction and La Agresion were hard on their heels.
The lead boats showed impressive speed as they headed windward on a starboard tack. Skyrider was their skill with a smooth spinnaker hoist despite a flattening gust.
Pulp Fiction followed ahead of Twist and Shout, the sole yacht to have taken the port tack.
La Agresion sailed by mother-and-daughter team Amanda Chrimes and Sandy Chrimes, closed the gap on the leaders.
Ziggy Stardust sailed consistently to their handicap and Kumarina with her two-man crew performed well.
The only B-division yacht, Emily II, with a combined age of over 200 in her crew, kept ahead of several of the A-division boats early in the race and handled the conditions skilfully.
The Sharpie fleet of four battled hard, Sidewinder was towed home, after becoming yet another casualty of the day and Woody Nook retired soon after.
This left a tremendous battle between Suicide Blonde and Just Suburban Boys with just 90 seconds separating them at the finish.
In other news the Pelican Training Camp was held on the weekend with 30 youngsters between seven and 14 taking part.
There were also six visiting yachts from East Fremantle.
