Swing into tennis season

28 Oct, 2009 10:25 AM
BUSSELTON Tennis Club’s summer season is now in full swing with most of the grass courts open for play.

A contingent of visitors from the Lesmurdie club joined local members on Saturday for social tennis followed by dinner.

Margaret Weir took out the Clock Tournament prize for the highest winning score of the day with 28 games, followed by Bernie ‘Boom Boom’ Masters on 26 games.

Consolation prizes went to Shirley Dick and Deanne Smith on 22 games, Izaac Strauss with 20 and David Stewart, 19 games.

Pennants tennis goes into its second round this week with Busselton fielding five teams in the South West women’s competition, while five teams are also entered in the mixed spring Sunday pennants competition, which commenced on the weekend.

Busselton is gearing up for a busy summer program which will include special new events and the usual variety of options to suit competition and social players. While most of the tennis on Saturdays is social, there will be some scored sets occasionally to add a competitive element.

The Tuesday mixed and Thursday men’s night teams competitions are now well into their 10-week spring season, while the men’s Retro competition gets underway next Wednesday.

Social tennis events at the club are open to visitors and newcomers to town who can enquire about the attractive membership options available, including an introductory one-month membership for $20.

Social sets are played from 1.30pm on Saturdays and 9.30 on Wednesday mornings. Juniors play their social tennis on Fridays from 4pm.
