Big bowls in Dunsborough

11 Jan, 2012 09:33 AM
HIGH-quality bowling and bowlers were out in force at the Dunsborough and Districts Country Club this weekend.

The club hosted the annual South West zone inter-league championships, bringing together composite teams from the Murray Districts, South West, Leeuwin and Blackwood bowling leagues.

The event, sponsored by the Department of Sport and Recreation, was staged over two days and it produced many tightly fought contests between very talented players.

The competition was eventually won by the South West league, following a similar performance last year. The Leeuwin league finished in second place, a very credible achievement, considering its small size in comparison with the other associations.

The whole weekend ran smoothly under the direction of Leeuwin League president Ernie Sharp and his energetic cohort, Wally Treloar. They were well supported by Dunsborough club officials and volunteers involved in looking after competition needs, maintaining score boards and providing catering for the large number of players and spectators.

At the end of the weekend, five teams of four players were selected to represent the South West zone in the inter-zone championships due to be held at York in the near future. Some surprise was expressed when no players from the second-placed Leeuwin league were included in the inter-zone representative sides.

In other bowling news, the Leeuwin League pennants competition resumes next Saturday following the Christmas/New Year break.
