PLAYERS sweltered through their Australia Day matches at the Busselton Bowling Club.
Several members chose to reconsider their participation in the event when the temperature gauge reached 39 degrees and the club also decided to cancel the last game because of the hot conditions.
Although the event was a mixed fours competition, it was a three-man team that triumphed as their fourth,female member had phoned in to cancel due to the extreme weather forecast.
Winners were Peter Fancote, Gerry Brundish and Morey Silverman.
Best dressed for the day were Phyl Peach, Di Fancote, Margaret Nixon and Elizabeth Thomas.
The day started with club members, and family, celebrating Australia Day with a champagne breakfast which was cooked to perfection by the men’s match committee.
Last Wednesday the ladies completed their championship pairs with the semi-finals and finals also played in unpleasantly hot conditions.
The games were suspended during the finals when there was an appeal against the increasing heat after only eight ends had been played.
Several players went home for a shower and a change of clothes before the games resumed two hours later.
Margaret Grigg and Jennie Bruce won the major when they defeated Corey Van de Heuvell and Karen Gaglia in the finals.
The plate was won by Judy Rice and Shirley Silverman when they defeated Shirley Riley and Helen Paganoni.
Twilight bowls continues to attract members, their families and others who are interested in just having a go.
On Friday night close to 30 players enjoyed a cool evening of bowls and stayed on for a beef and gravy roll.

Corporate bowls has commenced with more than 70 teams, over two days, taking to the greens for an hour of fun bowling.
Some of the teams have become very competitive after playing for several years and have been graded accordingly.
The season will run for six weeks with the final on Wednesday, March 14.
