ROD Grist’s team rose from the ashes to win their final game in the open mixed fours competition held at Dunsborough on Sunday.
Rod, along with wife Daisy, Gail Barry and the irrepressible Kevin Gibb, clawed their way back from eight shots down to eventually win the game and take out this prestigious event.
In a tight finish, Kelly Allsop, Brian ‘Yardy’ Marwick, Pam Brown and Verna Stephens were runners-up, accumulating six points and ending up a single shot behind the winners.
Third place was claimed by Ray Scrimgeour, with his group of up-and-coming bowlers, Jem Coupar, Sharon Sharpe and Frank Coupar.
The ladies triples championship was completed last Friday after the final qualifying game was abandoned because of extreme heat conditions.
Jean Kelly, Elsa Chaytor and May Armstrong proved to be the most consistent team and were pronounced winners of the championship event.
Daisy Grist, Gail Barry and Sue Chester were prominent throughout the course of qualifying games and they emerged as runners-up in the tightly fought contest.
Many Dunsborough members and friends gathered at the country club to celebrate Australia Day. Informal games of bowls were played in the late afternoon before participants retreated to the cool confines of the club’s excellent facilities.
Club stalwart Estelle Perry has been organising games of bowls every Monday morning at the club, catering for people who may be considering taking up the sport.
These mornings are very casual affairs and designed to encourage people who have no previous experience with bowls.
Interested people should contact the club on 9755 3250 for relevant details.
