Dunsborough’s annual ladies gala day

08 Feb, 2012 10:12 AM
THE Dunsborough Country Club staged its annual ladies gala day last Friday, attracting large numbers of bowlers from other South West clubs and one from Exmouth.

The cool and windy conditions made life uncomfortable at times but high standards of bowling were maintained throughout the day.

Dunsborough’s Valrona Don skippered the winning team and she was well supported by Sue Chester, Dianne Tas and event co-sponsor Judy Henderson. They gained the maximum six points and accumulated a massive 54 shots up on the day.

Beryl Payne, Kerry Scott, Betty Turner and Pam Bickers from Capel were runners-up with six points and a very competitive 32 shots up.

Third place went to another Dunsborough team that was called in to play when one of the visiting sides cancelled.

Jean Kelly, Sam Berryman, Win Ellis and Beth Jackson played extremely well to win all of their games and finish with 31 shots up.

The Leeuwin League men’s pennant competition resumed on Saturday and first division league leader, Dunsborough Blue, lost to home side Margaret River. The clubs claimed one rink each and drew the third with Margaret River narrowly winning the aggregate score by two shots.

Margaret River gained four and a half pennant points for their performance while Dunsborough Blue came away with one and a half points.

In second division Dunsborough Blue, playing at home, had a comfortable win over Cowaramup. They won both rinks, took the aggregate by 57 to 27 and gained four pennant points.

Dunsborough White didn’t enjoy similar success when they travelled to Augusta and lost both rinks and the aggregate score. Augusta was awarded four pennant points and Dunsborough came home empty handed.

The 2012 novice and veterans’ singles championships were run at Dunsborough on Sunday, attracting a large field of aspiring bowlers.

Rising star Frank Couper beat off some talented opposition to become this year’s novice champion.

Meanwhile, the two oldest players on the green, Jim ‘Jay Are’ Robertson and the wily Ray Scrimgeour, were pitted against each other in the veterans’ final.

Ray eventually emerged as this year’s champion following an intense struggle with a much respected opponent and friend.

Norm Gage displayed excellent fighting qualities when he overcame a large deficit to edge a gallant Syd Rogers out of the veterans’ plate.
