THERE was a slight hiccup in the start of the Ladies 52nd Busselton Bowling Carnival on January 6, when a team turned up from Perth that thought they had nominated.
Captain Shirley Reilly was forced to round up another team from Busselton for the competition. Overall 38 teams lined up to play from as far away as Exmouth, Ravenswood, Kojonup, and Augusta while the South West league members fielded a team.
The weather was mild and although the wind caused some grief on Sunday to all teams most agreed it was a pleasant change from the usual hot weather.
Two games of fours x 14 ends and two games of pairs x 10 ends were played both days.
As with all major events at the club it is the tireless hard working volunteer workers who determine the success of the event.
Green keeper Ian Pennington and his team started at 6am to prepare the three greens for play.
The kitchen workers, match committee, umpires, and raffle and stall holders spend weeks organising their preparation for the event and start long before the bowlers arrive.
The ladies were full of praise for the effort put in by a handful of men who worked both days, all day preparing 350 meals and morning and afternoon teas under the guiding hand of Phyl Peach so that more Busselton lady members could play.
The concert after the high tea on Thursday night was definitely the highlight of the event and was voted one of the best ever run , with skits that boasted can can girls, skiffle group and a production line that left everyone gaping until the audience found out that most of the actors were husband and wife teams.
Our biggest thanks must go to Callows Transport, South West Cycles and Jenma Electric for their sponsorship for without them this event could not be run.
• Twilight Bowls started last Friday at the Busselton Bowling Club, and will continue for the next four weeks.
The games start at 5.30pm.
Billed as Barefoot Bowls in other states, it has proved very popular with non members of the club. For $10 you receive a game and a beef and gravy roll.
For catering purposes, please ring the club before noon on Thursday on 9752 2164.
