Ladies veterans singles at Busselton Bowling Club

08 Feb, 2012 10:09 AM
BUSSELTON ladies commenced their veteran singles competition, but with only five members entering the event the captain was forced to play a round robin.

Three players played two games before the game was cancelled due to too much heat.

The former Fijian ladies singles champion, Matitha Reynolds, played a former singles winner from the Leeuwin League Corey Van den Heuvel in a exciting and evenly-matched game.

Corey was ahead most of the way when Maritha slowed the game down by approaching the head to gain greater insight into just where her bowls were.

This single change in the play resulted in Reynolds slowy overtaking Van den Heuvel to win 17-16.

Long-time member Beryl Rose had two games and was very competitive but has not been able to control the game to win.

Long-time rivals Margaret Grigg – a former winner of many singles events at the club – played last year’s winner Shirley Silverman.

Grigg was in top form and must have hit the kitty on every end which finally was the reason that she went down. Grigg played a perfect line to pick up the jack which on the fast green carried to Silverman’s back bowl and a loss 16 -17.

Thirty six men nominated for the championship singles, which was held on Sunday.

They played three games each with 12 still remaining in the plate and major event.

Players are evenly matched with some very long games being played. The first member to attain 25 shots advanced to play another game.

Matthew and Scott Pennington, along with two others from the South West league, have been chosen to represent the Country All-Stars to play the state team in Perth before the commencement of the men's country week.

With one week left to play, all four Busselton ladies pennant teams are in the top four and all four Saturday men's teams are in the final four as well.
