LION Nathan, comprising Carl Sanderson, Rebecca Lawson and Wayne Evans, won the Busselton Squash Club’s A-grade spring pennants grand final. They defeated Happs team of Tom Payne, Mat Mildwaters and Luke Mattaboni.
Carl lost the first game but fought back to win in four games against Tom.
The right-handed Rebecca played left hander Mat, which meant shots were played tight on the walls and anything loose was pounced upon.
Both players anticipated each other’s play well and took turns to outplay each other, however, Mat picked up the tempo towards the end to outrun Rebecca.
The match between Wayne and Luke could easily have gone either way. Their shots were crisp and accurate with both players determined to keep the rallies long. The close final score was an indicator of the quality of the game.
In B-grade Capel Vale’s team of Caen Cousins, Clinton Ashworth, Dene Rafferty and Chris Richard downed Anniebrook’s Aiden Zykowski, Alan Coyne, Lisa Wake and Shane Stirling.
The highly anticipated match between Caen, 19, and Aidan, 14, proved to be a cracker and the highlight of the night. The game was full of hard hitting and constant scrambling to reach an unexpected shot.
Both young men were under intense pressure and neither seemed able to get a consistent length into the back corners. The final result saw Aidan win in three games, but only by two points per game.
In the other B-grade matches Dene’s hard-hitting game overpowered Alan, and Lisa showed great consistancy and variation with her shots to outpoint Clinton.
Chris won the final match by outfoxing his opponent, Shane, with some fine shots from centre court and working Shane around the court.
