GEOGRAPHE Bay Race Week got off to a flying start and is set to continue in the same vein throughout today and tomorrow, before the last races on Friday morning.
Race week manager Ian Meiklejohn, from the Geographe Bay Yacht Club (GBYC), said the event had met all expectations so far.
“It’s been a tremendous regatta so far – the club is extremely pleased and there has been great camaraderie between everyone involved,” he said.
“All the divisions have been hotly contested and there has been reasonable wind.”
Ian said there were 91 boats involved in the regatta, in nine different divisions, and that they had come from near and far.
“There are a couple of yachts from interstate, as well as competitors from Perth, Albany, Mandurah, Bunbury and Esperance.
“There would be about 700-800 people out on the water, when all divisions are racing.”
Some of the local sailors to look out for include Twist and Shout (Skippered by Doug Lawler) in division two and Electric Tram (Barry Brown), Skyrider (Dave Watts) and Pulp Fiction (Pete Fleming) in division three.
Yachts skippered by Ken Waller and Mark Blizzard were also competing, as was the Flying Tyke (Doug Kelly).
Nigel Chesterfield-Evans entered his catarmaran, Cosmic Gift, in the multi-hull division, while Ian said another local team aboard Foolish Behaviour was competing well in division eight.
He said the night race, held on Monday evening, was a highlight of the event, with yachts racing into the sunset over Geographe Bay.
The event was officially opened last Friday by Richard Court at The Deck Tavern.
