An allegedly drunken father who fled a car crash leaving his three-year-old daughter in the burning wreck made a brief appearance in court on Wednesday.
Bevan Stanley Cameron, 25, faced Perth Magistrates Court via videolink from Hakea Prison over a string of charges including failing to help his toddler, Ebony-May, after he crashed a stolen car in Midland.
Mr Cameron, of East Victoria Park, faces 10 charges, including being armed to cause fear, aggravated assault, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and drink-driving. He is also accused of driving without a licence and stealing a motor vehicle.
Dressed in a green prison-issue tracksuit and sitting in a wheelchair, Mr Cameron requested Magistrate Gregory Smith grant a seven day adjournment so he could seek legal representation.
Police allege Mr Cameron was involved in a domestic incident at an Ellenbrook property on Sunday night where he allegedly attacked his former partner's 16-year-old niece with a baseball bat before fleeing with his three-year-old daughter, Ebony-May, in a family member's Kia Carnival.
An hour later, officers allegedly sighted the vehicle driving without headlights in Midland.
Mr Cameron allegedly failed to stop for police, but officers chose not to pursue the car to ensure the safety of the child.
A short time later the car was found crashed into a concrete barrier on the Great Eastern Hwy. It erupted into flames and Mr Cameron allegedly fled the scene on foot.
Police officers rescued Ebony-May from the wreckage and she was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital by ambulance. She remains in hospital in a serious condition after emergency surgery.
Mr Cameron was arrested by police in Beaconsfield Avenue, Midvale on Sunday night and was taken to Swan District Hospital with leg and foot injuries.
He has been remanded in custody to next appear in court on April 30.
