A QUIZ night will be held this Friday to raise money to help support Debra Kurmann and her two children following the death of her husband Peter Kurmann from a shark attack.
Two friends of Debra and Peter came up with the idea to host a quiz night following his funeral in April.
Nicole McCarthy and Nina Middleton began organising the event, which they intended to hold the same month.
Nicole said she started speaking to people and was shocked by the response by the local community.
“We wanted to help Debra out, but felt a bit helpless.
“The idea was first to raise some money to help Deb out and get her a cleaner, but it’s just snowballed.
“We never thought it would get so big, so far we have 40 tables of eight booked and people are still calling.
“We first started by asking around for donations for prizes and the response was amazing, donations just kept coming in, so we decided we would see how it went and pushed the event back to June.
“At this point we have about $15,000 worth of prizes that have been donated by the community.
“It is heart warming, everyone has been involved, small businesses have really come through with big gifts as well as wineries, and bigger local businesses,” Nicole said.
Nina, who has known Debra since school, said she had been overwhelmed by the way the whole town has pulled together to support the family.
“This is a small positive out of a really terrible situation.
“Everyone knew him and he was such a part of the community, I think that’s why so many people have wanted to help out,” she said.
The night will include a quiz, silent auction, live auctions, door prizes, lots of spot prizes, give-always plus lots of fun and games.
“We want to raise money for the Kurmann family, but we also just want it to be a really fun night,” Nina said.
The quiz night will be held at the St Joseph’s School hall.
The bar opens at 6.30pm and the quiz begins at 7.30pm.
Tickets will be sold on the night and are still available from Callows Newsagency and Sportsfirst Busselton.
