Residents in angry response

JAN and Hank Klomp are shocked and angry to learn that there is an application to build a house on the beach side of Geographe Bay Road.

They will be the most affected as according to plans provided by the city it will be right in front of them on the 2.97ha block.

There are no buildings for several kilometres in the stretch of beachfront from the lagoon at the bottom of Elmore Road to the other side of Dunn Bay Road in Dunsborough.

But they are not the only ones who are angry. Some of their neighbours are also livid.

They all purchased land and built homes in the belief they would have an uninterrupted view of the ocean – though in some instances peppermint trees now block some views.

“How could the shire (city) not know it was private land, that long ago,” Jan said.

“If a house is built it will be right in front of our house,” she said.

“If we’d known this could happen we would never have built our home here,” Hank said.

“And neither would others along here. People paid top dollar for these positions.”

The Klomps bought their property in 1974 and there was no mention that the land facing them was privately owned.

“We are shocked and the family is upset, that this could happen,” Jan said.

“Others along here are more angry. When we bought the land we didn’t query that it was private land across the road. We built so we could have a view – so we could see the ocean!’
