FOR most Australian households a shed is commonplace, but for the Legacy campsite on Bussell Highway it is something they desperately need.
Legacy on Geographe provides holidays for all Legacy registered widows and widowers of fallen police officers and respite holidays for Australian Defence Force families.
The campsite offers 19 dormitory style bedrooms with the capacity to host a maximum of 55 people at a time.
Legacy on Geographe manager Shane Wickham said a shed was desperately needed at the campsite to provide a safe place to store tools, equipment, heaters, bedding and linen.
“At the moment we are storing everything in what is meant to be the men’s showers because we just don’t have anywhere else to store it,” he said.
“Especially in these colder months, we need somewhere dry and waterproof.”
Mr Wickham said the campsite used to have three small sheds but they were removed due to asbestos.
“Everything is currently left out in the open and with the sea air things can get really rusty,” he said.
“Many people think we are government funded, but we’re not, we run wholly and solely on donations and it’s what we thrive on so it would be great if a chain of sheds approached us to donate one.”
Acting Officer in Charge Sergeant Todd Carrington said Legacy played an important role in the community.
“Police officers and defence force personnel risk their lives everyday,” he said.
“The least the community could do is donate a shed for the benefit of the families who stay at Legacy.”
