CHEEKY was the word used to describe the location of a speed camera by a local resident in relation to a deployed on Caves Road.
Fiona Hawker said she questioned the location of a speed camera regularly positioned on Caves Road in Abbey where the zones change from 70 to 90 kilometres per hour.
“As it is not a dangerous spot and as they know it is where people will begin speeding up I feel it is simply revenue raising,” she said.
She said after speaking to several other residents that she learnt they felt the same about the location of the camera and had also been fined there.
South West district traffic coordinator Dave Hurdle said on July 15 at this location 40 per cent of drivers were caught speeding in the first 20 minutes at this location.
“There is no reason to be speeding up in the area before you enter the 90 kilometre zone,” he said.
Mr Hurdle said there were four reasons which influenced the deployment of speed cameras; fatal or serious accidents in the area, complaints, a high percentage of drivers exceeding the speed limit or operational reasons.
He also clarified that a zone starts where the sign starts, and not before.
“Most cars going over the speed limit were travelling at between 80 and 90 kilometres,” he said.
Mr Hurdle said there was a policy in relation to how far a speed camera could be positioned from a zone change, however he could not reveal what that was.
