TWO Busselton athletes have had their dreams come true at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Scott Sunderland and Laura Coles won gold medals over the weekend.
Cyclist Sunderland went into the 1000 metres time trial and defended his Delhi games title.
It’s the third Commonwealth Games gold medal for his career and made a risky change from the sprint team to the endurance line-up.
He told Fairfax Media’s Chris Barrett that his hard preparation paid off.
"It took me at least one lap to come around to see where I stood, I finished and was pretty dizzy in that last lap so I quickly looked at the scoreboards at either end and by the time I looked at the front one I couldn't really make out where I stood,” he said.
"I came here and only rode one event and being reigning champ and record holder to come back and do it again is great."
Coles won her first gold medal for the women’s skeet competition.
The 27-year-old shot 14 out of 16 targets in the gold medal shoot-off against Wales' Elena Allen, who missed three shots.
Coles started her career in shooting at the Busselton Clay Target Club when her father Glenn first took her at 12 years old.
With regular coaching from club founder Phil Larsen Coles was showing great promise.
Coles was consistently selected in the zone skeet and state junior teams.
Club member Greg Flaey said in order to help Coles reach her ambitions the club invested in a set of leporte skeet traps.
“The Busselton Clay Target Club has been very supportive of a strong junior ranks with several progressing to state and national teams,” he said.
The club is proud of its development of the juniors that come through ranks and has seen many take on national and international competitions.
The club hope to continue its great work and expand with a new location allowing them to provide the best facilities.
