KIM Mickle threw a games record to claim gold for Australian in the women's javelin at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The former Mandurah girl, who won the silver medal in the 2013 world championships, threw 65.96m to defeat two-time defending champion Sunette Viljoen from South Africa who's best effort was 63.19m.
Fellow Australian Kelsey-Lee Roberts finished third with a throw of 62.95m while the third Australian competitor Kathryn Mitchell finished fourth.
Mandurah MLA David Templeman said he was thrilled Mickle won gold.
Mr Templeman taught the local success when she was in primary school.
“I know that Kim Mickle has always been a determined young woman who loved sport as a child and her determination and commitment has seen her reach the top in the world in her athletics career," he said.
Mr Templeman said Kim was a great role model for children and young people in Mandurah and in the wider community and he was proud of her achievements.
“It’s important that local Mandurah kids and young people are reminded that so many young people who grow up here in Mandurah and the Peel region have, through hard work and dedication, gone on to achieve their dreams and aspirations," he said.
