A baby boy has survived a Syrian air strike that wounded his mother after she was hit with shrapnel that pierced her belly and scraped the baby's head.
Thousands of people have watched the footage of surgeons desperately and delicately resuscitating the minutes-old baby.
He lies sprawled on a dark table, his small arms also touching the blood-soaked bandages used during the surgery. A doctor softly pumps air into his lungs, via a mouthpiece that covers the baby's entire face.
The baby's dark hair is matted beneath a gauze covering to help heal the gash along the back of his head.
“This baby’s mother was wounded in the belly, and we had to remove him. He was hit in the head by shrapnel, and the doctors are trying to save him,” says a voice in the video footage.
The mother was injured during air strikes in the north-eastern Syrian city of Raqqa, which is currently held by Islamic State fighters.
The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights confirmed the surgery took place. They claim the strikes have killed 12 people, including five children, and wounded 23.
The monitoring group has confirmed both the mother and baby survived the surgery.
Raqqa has been the site of sustained fighting for weeks as ISIL fought to crush a pocket of resistance. Two people have been crucified and many decapitated, their heads placed on a spiked fence.
