YANCHEP, 250kms away, was the release point for this week’s for the Busselton Pigeon Club members and once again it was the ‘Almighty One’ Steve King who dominated the race.
This win makes it four in a row for King and this team he had a brace of birds hit the loft at 10.42 to register a fast velocity of 1406 metres per minute (mpm) and win by over two minutes in an otherwise close race.
The winning bird was a youngster bred down from top Perth flyer John Willmott and continues the success of this particular line of birds in the King loft.
With perfect returns ‘The Almighty One’ will now target the gruelling Carnarvon (1000kms) event this weekend.
Dave ‘Ian’ Chapple is also a flyer whose team is in top form and he gained another second place when his Blue Bar Hen registered a 1395 mpm velocity.
Chapple relies on wife Helen to train the birds while he is away at work and she has them working a treat.
The Brennan clan continued their consistent year but after a winning start they are now having to be content with the bridesmaid role. However, their charges are up with the leading birds and need just a little luck to reverse the trend.
Their clock bird was another Blue Bar Hen and being a 2013 bred bird will now be set for the sires race in three weeks time.
The big story of the year is that of the Sharminator, Ant Sharman, who is the current club champion.
Although he has had a consistent season he is yet to crack a win and again had to settle for a close fourth when his red hen was less than 30 seconds behind the Brennan bird.
The red family has been a revelation for Sharman and they will surely crack him a few wins before the season is out.
Rotten Ron Blackwell and Pete Adams claimed the next placings but it was 11 year old Joe “Trumpeter” Chapple who gained the accolades for the weekend when he claimed the pools for the first time.
Young Joe races in his own right and with only a small team of youngsters his pools win was a glimpse of things to come for this junior tyro.
Carnarvon and Yanchep are both on the calendar for the coming weekend and while Yanchep will be hotly contested it is the Carnarvon marathon that has members excited.
