South West celebrities have been selected as some of Australia’s most eligible bachelors.
Margaret River’s Nic Westaway and Dunsborough’s Tom Derickx have both made the cut for the 30 finalists for Cleo Magazine’s Bachelor of the Year.
The local boys have been selected for the final stage in the annual search to find the 30 most fun, sporty, good looking, quirky and down to earth gentlemen in Australia.
Actor Nic Westaway was raised in Margaret River, finding his passion for theatre in his high school years where he was involved in multiple drama classes and a social theatre group.
Westaway moved to Perth in his late teens and studied at WAAPA, graduating before claiming his present role as Kyle on Home and Away.
Tom Derickx, originally a carpenter from Dunsborough, almost gave up the footy dream after a string of injuries left him unable to play in consecutive seasons.
He was thrown a life line by Sydney Swans this year where he has become a key ruckman for the team.
When asked about his Cleo Bachelor of the Year nomination, Derickx modestly said he was not originally interested in being apart of the Bachelor search until his team talked him around.
Derickx said it was all in the name of fun, following a Swans tradition with the selection.
“It’s probably not going to increase my female exposure, but then again I don’t want to attract girls with just that.”
That didn’t deter Derickx from convincing Megan Fox to vote for him in a recent interview on channel 7 with herself and Will Arnett upon the release of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, where Derickx jokingly suggests he can show Fox around town after the interview.
Despite his sway with female movie stars, Derickx had a strong year on the field, playing 12 games and being a force in the centre.
Unfortunately with the Swans heading towards their preliminary final against North Melbourne at ANZ Stadium, Derickx has been ruled out after being placed on the long term injury list.
Despite his absence from the field, Derickx said the Swans were rearing to go after their brief break.
“The boys are itching to get out there,” he said,
“It’s going to hurt a bit to watch, but 12 games this year; it’s been such a change from last year for me.”
In terms of next season, Derickx aspires to cement his place within the team.
“I want a really good pre-season and to get to round one being the number one ruckman.”
Results for Cleo’s Bachelor of the Year are announced in early October with both local boys being hot contenders.
