DUNSBOROUGH residents who have a fear of needles do not have to worry anymore with a new needle free syringe.
The Dunsborough Medical Centre has introduced the new means of treating patients who have an aversion to regular syringes and for those who need multiple doses of medication in the one appointment.
Using Biojector technology, liquid medication is forced through a small opening in the skin at high speed, replacing the needle with a tool that utilises hydraulic compression in well under a second.
Despite the new nature of the technology, the demand for it by patients is continually increasing, according to David Hoy, National Operations Manager of Healthscope Medical Centres.
“Over the years our doctors have asked if there are any alternatives to a syringe, especially when patients are undertaking a series of injections for travel vaccinations or specifically in the case of children’s immunisation,” he said,
“Until now we have not had a viable alternative.”
In particular, the new technology holds great appeal for parents as it offers a quick, accurate treatment solution for their children.
“We have seen a great uptake of the needle free method from parents who are undertaking a series of immunisation on their infants,” Mr Hoy said,
“Both the parents and the baby are calmer and the treatment is over usually before the baby is aware of what has happened.”
The needle free option does cost an extra $5 but Mr Hoy said people were willing to pay.
