Infections disease experts from opposite sides of the country agree Australia's medical system will make the likelihood of an Ebola outbreak gaining a foothold here extremely low.
Curtin University infectious disease specialist Professor Charles Watson believes the risk of Ebola spreading to the wider Australian community is "essentially zero".
His comments come as Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital confirmed a woman in her 60s had been released from isolation, with Ebola tests coming back negative.
The patient recently returned from a conference in West Africa and, while she was showing symptoms consistent with Ebola, a Health Department spokesman said she did "not fit the picture of Ebola virus infection" and was likely suffering from malaria.
Professor Watson believes health authorities will exaggerate their response to any potential Ebola cases over the next couple of months, but said there was virtually no chance of the infection gaining a foothold in Australia.
"You might even say there will be a bit of an exaggerated response to these potential cases for a little while just to make sure that nothing could happen and to make it clear to the public that we have it under control, and I think that's a good thing," he said.
"The only people potentially at risk are the nursing and medical staff who are in contact with the patient, but because of the protective equipment that they should have and they do have in Australia, the risk to anyone in the community is essentially zero.
"It just doesn't happen. The risk is so low it's not on the radar at all, but that doesn't mean our health authorities won't react very firmly to any potential risk, just as they are doing at the moment."
His comments are echoed by University of Sydney senior lecturer Adam Kamradt-Scott, who told radio 6PR Ebola being diagnosed in Australia was a "fairly remote possibility but it's not out of the realms of possibility".
However he said the Australian government had a responsibility to offer support to the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
"Money will help but really what they need at the moment is trained professionals on the ground," he said.
"We're seeing other countries step up to the plate sending people there and allowing people to go there but Australia is discouraging the very notion that any Australian citizens might travel.
"The World Health Organisation overnight [Monday night] stressed the point again that any country with an international airport is at risk.
"Australia has fantastic health care services, so we can control the outbreak if the disease arrives here."
Professor Watson said any potential Ebola threat would likely be identified "every couple of weeks" in Australia.
"My guess is they will all turn out to be negative, on a betting basis, but the potential is there so we have to treat them all as if they are potential cases, and that's the way we will operate," he said.
