TWO teams enter the field, one leaves with a piece of history.
That is the mindset of Busselton Colts coach Paul Francis in the lead up to the season decider against Bunbury this weekend.
From the onset of the season, Coach Francis has aimed to train his boys in a way that would prepare them to play league football for Busselton.
This training has not lessened in any way as the big game approaches.
“Like every other game this season, we expect to give a good account of ourselves,” Francis said,
“If we improve on what we did every two weeks we have every expectation that we will finish ahead on the scoreboard,
“Whatever happens, the 22 boys that take the field will learn more about themselves and their football and this is a good thing.”
Having played Bunbury on three previous occasions this year with a narrow margin each time between the two teams, Francis said the game would be incredibly close.
“Bunbury are well coached and have a good mix of players similar to us,” he said.
The first quarter is everything according to Francis, with Busselton Colts playing hardball for the first 20 minutes of each match and then reassessing their options at the quarter time
“We have achieved a level of consistency in the second half of the season to show that generally we turn up on game day ready to play,” Francis said,
“We will do the same this week, but as a group we will be talking a bit more about this game because the end result is not four points but a place in history.”
The team surprised Francis with the quality of their performance from the onset of the season he said, along with Assistant Coach Brian Arbon and runner Dave Flemming, the encouragement and development the boys have received is a strong indicator to their grand final outcome.
In terms of next season, regardless of this weekend’s outcome, despite the loss of some players to schooling in Perth, Busselton have league players in the making and leaders in the Colts team.
“The future looks bright for our club,” Francis said.
The Colts grand final will be this weekend at Hands Oval, Sunday October 5.
Bounce down is at 9.30am.
