Michael Voss' decision to quit his various media roles and join Port Adelaide has signalled the triple premiership captain's desire to return to senior coaching in future.
Voss declared earlier this year his regret at becoming a senior coach with no experience, something he communicated to Port in recent days.
Port chief Keith Thomas said Voss had been the only candidate approached to replace the club's midfield coach Phil Walsh.
The move to secure Voss intensified in recent days when Voss was contacted not only by Ken Hinkley and his assistant Shaun Hart ??? Voss' former Brisbane teammate ??? but also captain Travis Boak.
Thomas said Hinkley had no issue with Voss' status as a former senior coach with ambitions to return to the role. "On the contrary," said Thomas, "he sees it as an advantage to have a man of his experience overseeing such an important part of our team."
Voss will replace Walsh, who has been appointed head coach of the Adelaide Crows.
"The brand of footy played under (head coach) Ken Hinkley and the continued growth of the club over the last two years has been very impressive," Voss said.
