THEY’VE been described as a mixture between folk rock, psychedelic rock and alt country and they’re on their way to Dunsborough.
Four-piece Aussie band Holy Holy will play at the Dunsborough Tavern this month as part of their History Tour and the Mail has a double pass to giveaway.
Comprised of Timothy Carroll, Oscar Dawson, Ryan Strathie and Graham Ritchie, Holy Holy are said to be one of the most promising bands on the music scene at the moment.
Emerging in 2013 with their smash hit ‘Impossible Like You’, the band have gone from strength-to-strength releasing ‘The Pacicic EP’ earlier this year followed by their new single ‘History’ which spent several weeks at number two on Triple J’s most played list.
The Mail spoke with the band’s front man Timothy Carroll ahead of the show.
What have you guys been up to lately?
We just finished a tour with Boy and Bear a couple of weeks ago and on that tour it was the first time the band and I have ever been to WA. We played Albany, Bunbury, Wave Rock and Fremantle so this will be our first time to Dunsborough.
What are you looking forward to most about the History Tour?
We’ve done a bit of support touring this year, supporting Ball Park Music, Boy and Bear and later on in the year we’re supporting The Preatures. So we’ve been playing quite a few shows but it’s different to our own show because there’s the opportunity to play a bit longer and do the full set and the audience is there to see you rather than another band so it’s always nice. I think it’s important to be able to do headline tours as well.
What can the South West audience expect from the show?
I’m really proud of the band we’ve got together. We’ve kind of all been involved in different projects over the years. I’m really honoured to be the lead singer and fronting this group. Ryan Strathie our drummer is really talented and an inventive player and I often get feedback from people after a gig that they can’t keep their eyes off him because he plays in a really special way so he’s a real treat. He’s been involved in a few different projects over the years but most notably he was the drummer in Hungry Kids of Hungary. And then Graham Ritchie is playing bass for us and has also been involved in lots of different projects too is really talented bass player. Oscar Dawson is a co-writer with me and a pretty phenomenal guitarist. So we try and make it so each of us brings a lot to the stage. And we like to kind of step outside of the songs a bit and improvise sections so we’re not playing the exact same set every time, so every show is different and that’s how we like it.
What is it like to work alongside such talented artist like Boy and Bear?
It’s a real honour to be sharing the stage with guys like that and you definitely learn a lot about them. They’re great songwriters and really professional and nice guys so it was an honour.
What are your favourite songs to play on tour?
There’s two songs that are the highlight of the set for me, one is a song called If I Were You which is a stripped back kind of song that builds and builds and has a cool drum solo that leads into a guitar instrumental section. I often try and drop that one somewhere in the beginning of the set because it sort of warms the band up and warms the crowd up. And then there’s another song called You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog which is one of our favourites and finishes with a big 80s guitar solo moment. It’s a really cool moment and a kind of nostalgic sound that you don’t really hear many bands going for these days.
Future plans for Holy Holy?
The main focus at the moment is to finish this album. We kind of wrote an album at the beginning of this project and recorded it but after all the touring we’ve changed a bit as a band. So we have to go back and re-record some stuff. And then we’re releasing the album next year and we have another single coming out next January and then the album will be out in March and we’ll be doing an album tour, The Preatures tour and then there’s talk about going overseas to tour the UK and Europe in May I think so quite a lot happening. We’ve just gotten to the stage where all of us in the band are now not doing day jobs, we’re only doing music-related work so that’s an exciting place to be at and it’s taken a while to get here.
