IN a fitting coincidence, a painting by John Garrett Bussell’s great, great grandchild will be auctioned off to help commission his sculpture.
On Friday the Busselton Settlement Art Project will host a sunset garden to help raise money for the sculpture which is the third in line in the six series of sculptures to recognise Busselton’s history.
Elizabeth Staite chose one her favourite paintings to be auctioned which is of a bush fire and is called Temples of Long Standing.
Her brother Frank Elliott said art ran in the family with their grand mother also being a water colour artist.
The event will also auction a wine rack made from original timber from the 150 year-old Busselton Jetty.
“While it is essentially a fundraiser, it will give people the opportunity to celebrate the commissioning of the second sculpture,” Busselton Settlement Art committee chairman and City of Busselton councillor Rob Bennett said.
“We have been fortunate to get Dianne Laurance as guest speaker while Vasse MLA Libby Mettam will compere the event,
“Mrs Laurance has a great interest in the arts and in particular sculptures, one of hers Chick on a Stick, has become a major tourist attraction at her Wilyabrup winery.”
The City of Busselton has contributed $50,000 to each of the first three sculptures, but contributions from individuals and companies are welcome.
