WHALE watching along the Dunsborough coast has been delighting tourists and locals for generations and one of the best vantage points is set to receive a face lift.
A new whale watching platform will be erected at Point Piquet as part of the Australian Federal Governments National Whale Trial initiative.
Federal Member for Forrest Nola Marino said the $25,000 in funding provided to the City of Busselton stemmed from a Coalition election promise.
“The new platform will be land-based and offer a close vantage point to view the whales as they migrate along the coast – something I’m sure people will enjoy” said Mrs Marino.
City of Busselton Mayor, Ian Stubbs believes the annual whale migration is a spectacular event with enormous ecological and economic importance “This funding will enhance the experience for residents and visitors alike and support the valuable research being done by the Dunsborough Coast and Land Care group who have been recording the movement of whales in the area for many years,” he said.
The Whale Trail initiative was designed to provide Commonwealth funding to local communities to assist in building whale viewing platforms and interpretive signage to educate visitors about migratory whales.
Planning is now being carried out to finalise the platform design before February of next year.
