A learner driver, accused of driving like a hoon, is facing a range of charges after a failed attempt to evade police in Monjingup, 720km east of Perth, on Saturday night.
Esperance police said they were responding to several reports of hoon driving in the Monjingup area when they spotted a vehicle turn onto the South Coast Highway.
Police say they made a u-turn and tried to stop the vehicle but the driver failed to stop and attempted to evade them.
Police followed the vehicle, and at the intersection of South Coast Highway and Harbour Road the driver lost control of the car, which hit the median strip and came to rest in a culvert.
Police say two people tried to escape into nearby bushland but were taken into custody a short time later.
The male driver was arrested and his female passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution.
A 20-year-old man from Monjingup has been charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop for police, driving an unlicensed vehicle and unauthorised driving by a learner.
He is due to appear in the Esperance Magistrates Court on Tuesday December 9.
Meanwhile, in North Bannister, 102km southeast of Perth, another hoon had his car impounded after being clocked travelling at 175km/hr in a 110km/hr speed zone.
The 20-year-old Mount Lawley man was caught by police who were carrying out patrols on Albany Highway, near North Bannister, around 9:50pm.
Boddington police charged the man with reckless driving and his Toyota Yaris was impounded for 28 days.
In a third incident, police charged a New Zealand man with driving under the influence after a breath test found he was more than four times over the legal limit.
Police say they stopped the 34-year-old East Victoria Park man after they noticed that the Mitsubishi van he was driving had a broken tail light on Boundary Road, St James.
He was charged with failure to wear a seatbelt and failure to carry overseas official documentation of a driving authority.
The man is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday December 19.
A defect notice was placed on the van and the man's licence was disqualified.
